The main differences between Intense Pulsed Light and lasers

Understanding these differences helps choose the right technology for specific beauty treatments. In practice, lasers offer precise results, making them great for tasks like hair or vein removal. IPLs, on the other hand, are better for general treatments like anti-aging or facials. It's worth noting that the boundaries between these treatments aren't always strict.
Let's break down the main differences between IPLs (Intense Pulsed Light) and lasers:
  1. Wavelength Range: Lasers emit a single, precise wavelength of light, while IPLs produce a wide range of wavelengths, typically between 450nm and 1200nm.
  2. Energy Source: Lasers get their energy from stimulated emission, whereas IPLs use a flash lamp, often with Xenon lamps, to generate light. The generated light is then filtered to remove unwanted wavelengths.
  3. Light Characteristics: Here are three key distinctions:
    1. Coherence: Laser light is organized, traveling in parallel and producing a focused beam. In contrast, IPL light is a mix of various wavelengths emitted in different directions.
    2. Collimation: Laser light stays concentrated and doesn't spread much, while IPL light disperses more due to its non-focused nature.
    3. Monochromaticity: Laser light has one color or wavelength, while IPL light is made up of multiple wavelengths.

Although some believe that modern IPLs are as selective as lasers, that's not entirely true. IPLs have limitations when treating dark skin types, as they aren't as precise.

When skin contains a lot of melanin, IPL energy must be reduced. Sometimes, this reduction is significant, leading to unsatisfactory results. However, if most of your clients have skin types 4 or lower, IPL can still be a good option when starting a laser clinic.
